Matapeake State Park. That’s where Abigail and Bradley met up to photograph them ahead of their upcoming wedding at the Valley Country Club. For those of you who don’t know, Matapeake is located on the other side of the Bay Bridge facing West, where a view of the sunset is spectacular, given the right conditions.
And as chance would have it, we had a gorgeous August evening, kissed by whispering clouds, a cool, dry breeze, and witnessed by Abigail and Bradley’s dog, Stella! Yes, Stella, as in A Streetcar Named Desire (say “Stella!” in a voice like Rocky Balboa screams out “Adrian!”). Sweet Pit Bull and Shepherd mix, she recently learned to swim and is addicted to water.
Besides enjoying the photoshoot with Abigail and Bradley in sort of the normal conventional way a photographer would enjoy a shoot, I really enjoyed seeing them take in the beauty of the sunset. As I switched lenses and tinkered with strobe lights, I would sneak a peak at them as they laughed and giggled on the water swept beach. We all know the humans are drawn to water. But we forget that this mystery is wedded (pun intended) to the perpetual mesmerization we human have with the sunset. This ball of fire, descending softly into the the watery horizon. We photographers call it “The Golden Hour” because in the evening it renders a golden hue on anything its rays touch. Not like the harsh hot white light at noon. Its beauty defies the fact that it is a burning star millions of miles away ablaze with millions of nuclear explosions simultaneously.
And so this is the backdrop of our shoot this midsummer evening. The sun. The Chesapeake Bay. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge. Stella. Sand. Water. And two beautiful people who are about to take an oath that they will love each other as long as they live. Anything more beautiful? Stay tuned to Abigail and Bradley’s wedding photos “teaser” shots. Besides being a most elegant location, their venue is covered wall-to-wall with Art Donovan memorabilia, as it is owned and operated by Baltimore’s late great NFL Hall of Famer’s daughter on a large beautiful estate in Towson.
